Finca El Liquidambar is located in the community of Las Acacias in the municipality of Marcala, department of La Paz, in the west central area of Honduras. This area is known for its high quality coffee and is in fact the first growing region in Central America to gain Protected Origin Denomination for coffee.
MEET THE FARMER:
Ma. Nery Marquez Granados and her husband planted the first coffee trees in the 1980s on land that they had inherited. Liquidambar is the name of Since the passing of her husband, Ma. Nery and her children were tasked with maintaining the farm and the quality of the coffee. They have 6 permanent employees and 45 temporary workers during busy times such as harvesting. Growing coffee for the international market has allowed her to realise her dream of sending her children to university.
Aware of the importance of conserving the natural resources of the farm, they carry out various conservation practices that include the protection of forests and water; proper water management, honey and pulp, and protection of water sources. The use of sweetgum (Liquidambar), plum, guama, avocado, pine and orange trees control the shade of the coffee plantation.
