If you've been in the UAE long enough, you have at least a passing fascination with the desert. Whether you just like to dip your ties in the sand, or you're an avid off-roader (with two- or four-wheels), the desert forms an integral part of weekend activities in this country. While we love our Caffeine Cruises, we were also eager to venture into the desert.
As time passed and we mulled over a few concepts, the idea of an introductory lesson on off-road riding kept coming up, especially when paired with our eagerness to work with the lovely people at ADV Moto Skillz.
The result of that collaboration took place this past Saturday as "A Day In The Sand." A 6:30 a.m. rollout time from the Cafe saw about 10 riders on adventure/enduro motorcycles hit the road. We picked up a few more riders at our first fuel stop, and a couple briefings later, we were set up in the desert.
Michael, ADV Moto Skillz's instructor walked all the riders through the basics of off-road riding, differentiating between various low-traction environments and how to navigate them. Everything from throttle control to how to dismount from a bike safely was included - then it was time to ride!
Two hours later, with the sun high in the sky, we marvelled at the progress the cohort had made. The "students" had become a lot more comfortable riding in soft sand and were able to tackle bigger dunes confidently, while actually enjoying themselves.
After the lesson ended, the group enjoyed some light bites and coffee. The most common thing we heard during this break was how much the riders enjoyed off-road riding and how much they'd like to try it again.
None of this would have been possible without Michael and Kristen, the duo that make up ADV Moto Skillz. The level of organization beforehand and during the event, in addition to the level of instruction, left us very impressed. We look forward to collaborating with them in the future, so stay tuned!
